So every once in a while, I recall how many people — fans and industry insiders alike — refer the the character of Captain Jack Sparrow as being “cool”. No, not cool as in a really well-drawn, entertaining and endearing fictional character. Cool like he’s really badass, Reynolds-style. But it occurred to me today, that if Curse of the Black Pearl had been about Jack instead of Elizabeth, that movie would’ve been Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. Seriously, think about it: Some crazy, twitchy little weirdo who most everyone thinks should be in jail goes on a selfish, lawless, single-minded quest to get his precious transport-stuffs back from the fat bastard who stole it from him, and the story ends with weirdo risking everything he’d gained to commit one unselfish act that saves countless lives, only to be arrested for his previous crimes the moment his guard is down, but is then granted a last minute reprieve for his good deeds? Throw in a hobo sing-a-long and they’re twins.
